We were contacted by an existing customer of ours for a new lobby sign. We had made them a lobby sign a few years back, and they needed a similar one made for a new office. From the photo, you can see that this was a very custom job. The colors in the logo are very specific so we custom painted the individual letters.
The first step to any lobby sign job is establishing what will be on the sign, the style of the sign, and how big it will be. In this case, it was pretty easy because we already had the logo from the previous sign, and we knew that the customer was looking for a dimensional letter sign. The only information we needed from the client was the measurement of the wall so we could recommend a good size sign for the space we were working with. The client was able to measure the wall himself and sent us a few photos of the space so we could scale a sign and provide renderings.
When dealing with existing customers and re-creating signs we’ve made in the past, we like to pull up the old documents such as the invoice and proofs to ensure that all of the sign specifications meet what the customer is looking for in their new sign. In the original sign, we had used 1/2″ thick acrylic for the main portion of the logo. The new sign was going to be about half the size so we decided to go with 3/8″ thick acrylic instead.
Another aspect of the sign that changed is “Pediatric Dentistry”. The first sign was installed onto a wall that was not even, so we put the acrylic letters onto a backer panel instead of installing the letters individually. We didn’t need to do this for the new sign because the letters were going onto flat drywall. We ended up making the smaller letters from 1/4″ thick acrylic. The lettering was pretty thin and small so we opted for 1/4″ as opposed to the 3/8″ that “Lollipop Dental” would be made from.
