Monument signs are a great way to advertise your business and to help people find your location. Many properties will have an existing monument sign like in a shopping center or plaza so when you move in, you just need to update one of the panels with your business information. Loyola Marymount University has a new school, Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television that is in a newly constructed building in Playa Vista. We worked on a few interior and exterior sign for this new school. The building has a monument sign that displays the building address at the top, and a map that shows you the route to the fire control room at the bottom. The middle section was empty, and the client wanted to use the space to display the school’s name in dimensional lettering.
The client had a mockup and artwork prepared for what they wanted, which was red dimensional lettering displaying the school name underneath the address. The placement and size of the letters balance out with the existing lettering well, but the red color makes sure that the name stands out and is easy to read. We made these letters with acrylic. The lettering was flat-cut from 1/4″ thick acrylic, and custom painted to match the color they wanted. The letters didn’t need to be too thick because the letters were pretty small, and the existing address letters weren’t very thick either. The letters were a little less than 2″ tall, and if you make small letters from thick material, it can end up looking bulky. Alternatively, you want to go thicker for larger letters to ensure durability.
Another reason we used acrylic is that acrylic is very versatile and durable. Acrylic is likely one of the most common substrates we use next to aluminum. Acrylic comes in many different colors and thicknesses, and it can be painted any color as we did for this sign.
Keeping your exterior signage up to date is very important to make sure that people are aware of what business is located in a building or plaza.
