We had made a lobby sign for Genesis LA in Los Angeles, California because they were interested in displaying their logo in their reception area. As you can see from the photo, we made an acrylic backer lobby sign. There are two main styles of non-illuminated lobby signs. Some clients want individual dimensional letters to be installed directly onto the wall either flush to the wall or with spacers. A lobby sign with an acrylic backer panel can have dimensional letters attached to it, or the logo can be digitally printed onto vinyl and laid onto the acrylic.

If a client is interested in having lettering that is spaced off of the wall, they would want to go with a dimensional letter sign. But if they want more of a panel with the logo on it, they would opt for a lobby sign with a backer panel. We can also use metal for backer panels, but acrylic is probably the more popular choice because it creates a very neutral background. The acrylic panel we used was 3/8″ thick and we applied etched vinyl on the 2nd surface to create a frosted glass look as opposed to the backer panel being completely clear.

The logo can be as dimensional or non-dimensional as you want. If you don’t care to make the logo dimensional, it can be digitally printed and made from vinyl. For dimensional options, you have all of the options of a dimensional letter sign. The only thing that we can’t do is space the letters off of an acrylic backer panel. For this sign, we made “GENESISLA” from 1/4″ thick acrylic and custom painted it to match their logo. The smaller lettering at the bottom was also made from painted acrylic letters, but we used 1/8″ thick acrylic because The letters were much smaller, and they would look too bulky if we used 1/4″ thick material. The outline of the logo was cut from 1/4″ white acrylic, and we adhered a digital print of the logo 1st surface. Note that with a digitally printed logo on an acrylic piece, the sides are still whatever color the acrylic is unless you want to paint it.
