We make custom painted acrylic dimensional letter signs for customers very frequently because it is a very straightforward way to make a custom sign. Take a look at the signs we made for Municipal Water Savings Corporation in Encino, California. They wanted their logo and their slogan to be displayed on the interior walls as dimensional letters. Because they had specific colors that they wanted to use, we painted the letters after they were made. Paint is the simplest way to get a specific color for the client. We can utilize digital prints on vinyl to get a specific color, which we do often for logos. But if we apply the vinyl on the face of an acrylic piece, the sides are still the color of the acrylic. In some cases, this may not be an issue for the client, but it looks much nicer when the entire piece is the same color if that part of the sign is meant to be a solid color.

The reason we used acrylic for these letters is because acrylic is a more high-end substrate compared to PVC or other plastics. Metal is also very high-end, but since we were painting the letters, we used acrylic because painted acrylic and painted metal do not look that different, and metal is also more expensive than acrylic.

The client wanted the letters to be spaced off of the wall. In order to do this, we need to stud mount the letters with spacers. Acrylic needs to be at least 3/8″ thick to be stud mounted which is why we used 3/8″ acrylic for this sign. If the letters don’t need to be stud mounted and will just be mounted flush to the wall, we can use VHB tape and silicone. Unless the letters are very large or too heavy, VHB and silicone will work fine.
