Lobby signs are very popular for many different businesses, and you can always find a good place to install one. Encino Outpatient Surgery Center in Encino is located inside of an office building and had two lobby signs, one next to the entrance in the hallway and one in the lobby. Due to a logo update, they had us make new signs to replace the existing ones. Both of the signs are the same style, just different sizes. They are reverse-lit acrylic dimensional letters mounted on an acrylic backer panel.

We use illuminated dimensional letters in place of channel letters when we’re making smaller signs. Lobby signs are much smaller compared to storefront signs or exterior building signs and channel letters need to have a minimum stroke for production due to the way that they are made. With the acrylic dimensional letters, the backs are hollowed out and the LEDs are placed inside so the stroke can be much thinner. We are also able to reduce the depth of the letters this way so it is more ideal than a 3 1/2″ deep channel letter on a 23″ x 45″ backer panel.

The bar and the smaller letters were too small to internally illuminate, even with the reverse-lit acrylic method due to the minimum size of the LEDs. Because of this, they were kept non-illuminated and made from 1/4″ custom painted acrylic. The backer panel is made from 1/2″ thick clear acrylic with polished edges and the signs were installed with 1″ x 1″ satin silver standoffs. The reason we mounted the letters onto a backer panel as opposed to mounting them directly onto the wall is due to the textured wall. Making sure that all of the letters are even, especially with the spacers, would be difficult, and the lighting would be uneven. The backer panel assures even lighting and easier installation.
