When First Baptist Church of Canoga Park reached out to us for a building identity sign, we knew that an acrylic dimensional letter sign would be the best choice. This is because the client wanted a letter sign to identify the building, but it did not need to light up. Our dimensional letters are flat-cut letters made from either solid acrylic or solid metal.
The reason we decided to use acrylic is that they wanted the letters to be black. Acrylic comes in black as one of the standard colors, so using black acrylic was the easiest solution. Metal can be painted black, but metal is already more expensive than standard acrylic. As painted metal and painted acrylic end up looking pretty similar, we would use black acrylic in this case unless the client or landlord is specifically asking for only a metal sign.
The letters were routed from 1/2″ thick acrylic. The letters were to be stud mounted and the minimum thickness to stud mount acrylic letters is 3/8″, so they needed to be at least 3/8″ thick. As this was going to be an outdoor sign, and they wanted to make sure that the letters had dimension, we used 1/2″ thick black acrylic.
The reason for stud mounting the letters is also because it’s an outdoor sign. Stud mounting means that studs are tapped into the back of the letters, and during installation, we drill holes into the wall, fill them with silicone, and push the studs into the walls. This ensures that the letters will stay put, and not fall off or move due to the weather, or other things that could disturb the sign.
