Churches can require a lot of signage if there is more than one building on the property and they serve different purposes. This goes for any business, organization, or school. First Baptist Church of Canoga Park was redoing a few of their existing signs, and looking into new signs to help visitors navigate easier and get to their destination efficiently. We made a few different signs for them, but today we’re focusing on a sign that we hung from the overhang. From the photos, you can see that this is a directional sign that is meant to direct people to either the Pre-K Building or Snyder Hall.
The reason we hung the sign was so we could make it large enough to read without blocking the view of the person walking. The initial sign design included a metal pole that was to be installed into the ground with a metal sign screwed onto it like a parking sign. After some walkthroughs and design revisions, the client decided to hang the sign instead which looks much nicer.
To make the actual sign, we mounted vinyl onto sibond, a rigid substrate that was mounted in a 2″ thick black retainer frame and screwed into the overhang with eye hooks. The lettering and arrows were made with black vinyl, but the logo was digitally printed. The reason we digitally printed as opposed to using pre-colored vinyl is that pre-colored vinyl only comes in so many colors, and the client needed specific shades of green to represent their logo properly. We could try to come close, but since there are so many different shades, it would require us to buy a lot of different colors of vinyl which can get expensive since we need to purchase a minimum amount of vinyl per color. Once you run the numbers, it is just much more efficient to digitally print the logo.
