When the San Dieguito Union High School District contacted our sign shop, the administration looked for 3D building letters for schools in San Diego, CA. They had to fit in with the overall letter display that the district favors. In particular, Pacific Trails Middle School had several locations on its campus that needed to be labeled in this way. These included the music and art buildings, the gym, and the administration.
After discussing the options with the client, the administration selected cast aluminum for the building letters. These products are ideal because they are lightweight but exceedingly durable. The aluminum does well in harsh sunlight, climates near the ocean, and anywhere you do not want to spend much time on signage upkeep.
Installing the letters opened up a world of possibilities.
- Flush mount. Because the client requested that some letters be attached to the building wall, we used a pin mount that allows for the flush installation of the individual letters. A good example is the Administration building. It displays the lettering above the entrance. The same goes for the gym’s side entrance.
- Bottom rail mount. Other building entrances had overhangs that were suitable for the installation of the letters with a bottom rail. Our technicians used studs that let the installers mount the individual pieces standing up. Look at the entrances to the Art and Music buildings to see what this looks like.
- Top rail mount. We did not have an opportunity to use this installation technique at the Pacific Trails Middle School. However, it is an option that could be suitable at your project site. It simply means that we install the letters hanging down from an overhang. Depending on the height of the entryway, it could be an excellent choice.
