After being challenged by representatives of the Von Braun Center  of Huntsville, Alabama to create an impressive wall graphic sign to enhance the look of an existing Freedom Shrine located in a major walk way between the North and South Halls of the center, Experience Signs went to work. The hallway gets tremendous daily foot traffic as patrons walk between the halls.

The image to the left shows the Freedom Shrine prior to the newly designed wall graphic backdrop. The shrine is a collection of historical documents arranged chronologically and randomly by size on a wall mounted board. While the shrine displays important United States history, the appearance does little to draw in people passing by. Given the importance of the content on the wall, drawing people to the documents was imperative to the success of the project.

To begin the project, the Experience Signs design team interviewed the primary stakeholders from the Von Braun Center and The Exchange Club of Huntsville to clearly understand their needs and desires for the newly designed wall appearance. Then, we went to work exploring the options for depicting US and Huntsville City history in an exciting and visually pleasing way. Ultimately, it was decided to leverage the space program as the basis for the design. Options included using Apollo, Space Shuttle or current rocket configurations.

The image to the left shows the final wall graphic. The graphic leverages a realistic rendering of the newest rocket that will take humans to Mars. The plume graphic was adapted from a picture of an actual space shuttle launch at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The image below shows the completed product with the shrine documents installed chronologically and visually pleasing way.

After vectorizing the plume picture to create an impressive visual, the design team chose a high tack premium vinyl for the print graphics. In addition, a premium cast vinyl was used for the cut lettering that is shown above the graphic. The lettering was installed on a concrete block wall with many contours and grout lines. The rocket image was constructed of printed vinyl applied to an aluminum composite substrate. The final major design decision was to offset the graphics and the rocket from the wall to give a dimensional feel.
