We live in a tech-centric world that has us marketing online and via mobile devices. But it is still true that getting attention is often achieved by a good sign that attracts customers or helps them find your brick and mortar business after they’ve found you online.

The way a sign is designed has a significant influence on attracting new customers to your business as they walk by.

Four Things to Consider in Signage Design

Getting the most out of your signage relies on important design principles that should be considered when designing banners, posters, outdoor, and indoor signs and as well as other graphics.

 Compelling Colour

Choice of colour is a huge factor in a well-designed sign. Colour helps to convey your brand identity and is often recognized before the design as a whole.

Colour affects us at a basic level. It expresses qualities and very often cultural associations. For example, in nature, Red is a warning colour often indicating a poisonous plant. It is also fiery and passionate and stimulating. Blue, on the other hand, is a cool colour, associated with peace and calm.

Living in the modern world does not mean that colour no longer has power over us.

 Contrast for Readability

Contrast of colours in a sign helps to determine the signs readability. The contrast between text and/or graphics in the foreground of a sign with a continuous background colour makes it easier for a potential customer to retain the sign’s content.

Size Matters

The larger the letters in a sign, the easier the sign is to read from a distance.  This is especially important when creating roadside signage. Large signs might be ideal for a conference or a trade show, inside and out.

Typeface also impacts readability, of course. For instance, a flowery script may convey a style, but it can be difficult for people to read, particularly over larger distances.

 Design Scalability

A good logo will be clear and crisp whether it is scaled up or down. This is important for your business logo because it gives you flexibility and allows you to design signage of various sizes without changing your logo.

Keeping your logo simple and effective is smart because it can be effective on letterheads and business cards, as well as on a banner or outdoor sign.

Sign design should take into account colour, visibility, the message, and quality. Whether you are imparting sales information or telling people who you are and what you do, good, well-designed, informative signage will help make your presence known.
