Adherence to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is the duty of every business that welcomes the public. Spark Signs & Graphics is a thought leader in the design, fabrication, and installation of ADA-compliant signs and room ID signs in Warrendale, PA. Here, we’ll look at custom signage we did for Tier1.
Understanding the Mandate for ADA-Compliant Signage
Consumers with visual challenges benefit from the signage rules that the ADA set forth.
- Raised characters. The labeling of a room must display in raised print. There is a 5/8-inch minimum requirement. The edges themselves must be rounded. The same goes for the Braille II dots that are part of the signage rule.
- Font selection. Ornate or decorative fonts are not appropriate for ADA signage. Instead, sans serif fonts that allow for easy recognition of the lettering are paramount.
- Color contrast. Other rules focus on the color contrast between the base color and the print hue. Here, the recommendation favors a 70-percent differentiation. A premier example would be black on white print.
Success Story: Tier1 Complies with ADA Signage Requirements
Our sign shop recently collaborated with Tier1 on an extensive signage suite that encompassed a broad range of products. An excellent example is the conference room sign that features white print on the dark orange background. This color match is in keeping with Tier1’s branding.
Moreover, the pictograph supports the meaning of the words. At the bottom, almost invisible to the naked eye, are Braille II dots. The raised characters meet all aspects of the requirements. They are rounded, contrast well, and are relevant to the labeled room. You will find a similar signage display for the quiet room that the company has designated in its office space.
Adding Room IDs to the Setup
Tier1 not only commissioned the ADA signs for permanent room usage but also requested room ID signs that would feature the name of the office’s occupants as well as their job titles. For these products, we selected a slightly rounded frame and slip-in display.
The upper portion features the company’s name and logo. Each aspect of the message consists of a brand color that identifies the firm. Moreover, the signage’s design allows for the easy switch of the insert, which is an excellent option when employees change offices. There is no need to reorder the signs. Instead, the insert can move with the worker.
