When we received the call from Layton Liquor in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, we really didn’t know what they we looking for other than they needed our help. Somehow their old monument had become damaged and needed to be replaced. A few issues that we were faced with included a large amount of pylon and monument signs on the street.
When our customer challenged us to design a unique sign unlike anything that was currently on Layton Avenue, we took that challenge seriously. We started by take pictures of the signs in the area. We tried to capture what people saw as they drove past the customer’s location. We noticed that everything tended to blend together. All the pylons and monuments create a blur of signs. Similar colors and designs cause all the signs to disappear. Our design would have to really stand out.
The second step was to determine what the city would allow. The City of Milwaukee is great to work with on projects like this. Because we have worked with the team from the Permitting group before, we knew exactly what they needed to make this process move quickly. Because of the 3 dimensional nature of this design, we had to provide some additional information on wind loads and how the sign was structured.
Once we had our permits we began on the drawings and design layout of the sign. This shape required us to cut multiple pieces and thermoform the pieces together to create the shape. Then we hard coated and sealed the exterior to prevent weather from affecting the sign. Off to paint and we were done.
