This blog series is the second of a four part series on the subject of Magnetic Signs, their uses, vulnerabilities and strengths presented by Manifest Sign.

Magnetic Signs by Manifest Sign — The importance of Magnetic Sign Flexibility

Naturally, a thinner magnetic material should be more flexible. Is thinner always better? As the magnetic sign thins down the result is less magnetic volume for the magnetic flux to reside. Less flux means less “sticking power”  thus increasing the possibility of your sign being pulled from the vehicle going at highway speed. Thinner materials typically generate less stiffness over a unit area. Consider cut corners. If the corner begins to lift under increased laminar air flow a tiny air pocket begins to form. You can quickly see how that can grow, very fast — pull your sign from your vehicle before you ever know what happened. Where you really want stiffness is around sign edges and especially in areas (such as corners) where the flux is less.  Since the manufacturer can’t predict where best to add stiffness the only alternative is to build uniformly into the materials.  Thus, stiffness, flexibility and magnetic strength represent a balancing act.

Considerations

You do want your magnetic sign to be flexible. You do want your sign to naturally conform to your vehicle without pressing in place. You do want enough stiffness in your corners so that they don’t have the tendency to tear or lift from the surface. You do want your sign to be thicker so that the magnetic volume will be higher. Trying to optimize one factor, at the expense of the others leads to an inferior product. At Manifest Sign we have selected particular products that create the necessary balancing act to give you the best balanced solution.

Back-side Coatings

Proper use of backside coating cannot be over emphasized. Aside from the logical conclusion of protecting your vehicle finish and not “attaching” to your vehicle over time, back side coating also reduces the minute stresses that naturally occur between how your sign expands and contracts on our vehicle versus the heating and expansion of the door surface. A good backside coating will “lubricate” the interface allowing the sign to slide in tiny amounts and maintain conformance to the surface without forming minute air pockets.
