photo 1A local Segway sightseeing company came to us for new signage after moving their storefront and re-branding their business. They had a design but were looking for production and installation ideas for hanging a blade sign from a decorative pillar. They also wanted to be able to change out three smaller signs that hung from the primary sign.

Memorial Day was coming up and they didn’t have the smaller signs designed but wanted their sign up since they are in a highly populated area and a destination for tourists. And, oh ya, they wanted the sign illuminated.

The location is a historical site on the Mississippi river in downtown Minneapolis and lighting the blade sign would not be possible by routing electricity through the old building. So, we found some inexpensive solar lights typically used in residential lawn & garden displays. We took a pipe and attached the lights on each end, then secured the pipe to the blade sign with a conduit tube strap. And we painted it all black to match the blade sign bracket.

The bracket was a special order, and once it arrived we used it to line up the eyelets to match the blade sign design.  KORT created a sign template based on the customers design, and we sent that to the router and cut the polymetal (plastic sandwiched between two pieces of aluminum) to create an oval shape. The graphics were printed on 3M IJ35C and laminated, then applied to both sides of the sign.

MPLS ToursWe figured we could use carabiner hooks on chains to easily put on and take off the blade sign. They don’t want the smaller signs to ‘spin’ in the wind so we plan on hanging them with two chains.

The customer decided to install the sign themselves, which was done in time for the Memorial Day weekend. Here’s a link to their website, if you ever want to tour the city of Minneapolis on a Segway! http://www.humanonastick.com/
